Oliver Gospel Mission celebrates 130 years

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Rescuing and rebuilding lives since 1888. The Oliver Gospel Mission celebrated 130 years of service in the Midlands Thursday night.

The Mission held a gala at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center.

The former governor of Arkansas and former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee was the special guest at the event.

Huckabee spoke to WIS about the decades of significance the Oliver Gospel Mission has offered the capital city.

"For 130 years the Oliver Gospel Mission has been giving people not so much just a place to stay, but a reason to keep living," Huckabee said. "It's not about homelessness, it's about hopelessness that many people face, and the Oliver Gospel Mission gives people hope. It's more important than a home, because if you have hope, there's nothing that can limit you."

The Mission also honored Jim Hudson and Bill DeLoach, who is chairman of the board of directors of the Oliver Gospel Mission for their years of philanthropy with the Mission.
