SOUTH CAROLINA (WCSC) -

The South Carolina DMV has released an image of the new REAL ID card which will begin to appear in 2018.

These licenses will be compliant with the federal REAL ID act from 2005. While changing your current card and purchasing a REAL ID is voluntary, you must have one or another federally approved identification if you want to pass through security at airports nationwide, enter secure federal buildings and visit military installation after Oct. 1, 2020.

South Carolina DMV official Lauren Phillips says people who won't go through airport security or visit federal facilities do not need to take any action besides renewing their current card when it expires. Non-compliant cards (not REAL ID cards) will still allow you to do the following

  • Drive
  • Vote
  • Apply for or receive federal benefits for which you’re entitled (Veterans Affairs, Social Security Administration, etc.),
  • Enter a federal facility that does not require an ID (i.e. a post office),
  • Access a hospital or receive life-saving services, and
  • Participate in law enforcement proceedings or investigations.

The cards will be publicly available starting in 2018, but those interested in getting a REAL ID can start the process now. To change to a REAL ID, the SCDMV must have the following documents on file.

  • Proof of Identity (Government-issued birth certificate or valid US Passport)
  • Proof of Social Security Number
  • Two Proofs of Current, Physical SC Address
  • Proof of All Legal Name Changes

If you have a Class D, E, F, G, M or any combination of those licenses and you're a U.S. citizen, you can buy a REAL ID license online with a valid credit card if your driving privileges are in good standing and your last renewal wasn't by mail.

For questions about REAL ID, please email REALID@scdmv.net or call 803-896-5000. For more information, visit the South Carolina DMV website.
