(RNN) - CNN is reporting that top-ranking U.S. Intelligence chiefs last week presented President Barack Obama and President-elect Donald Trump with classified documents that contained allegations that "Russian operatives claim to have compromising personal and financial information about Mr. Trump."

CNN cited "multiple U.S. officials with direct knowledge of the briefings" as its source. The information in the reports was not corroborated, The New York Times said Tuesday, adding that the paper was unable to confirm the claims.

Trump responded with a tweet: "FAKE NEWS - A TOTAL POLITICAL WITCH HUNT!"

Buzzfeed followed the CNN report by publishing what it said is the full document, containing what it called "unverified and potentially unverifiable" allegations between Trump aides and Russian operatives and claims of graphic sex acts.

The classified briefings were presented by top U.S. Intelligence chiefs, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, FBI Director James Comey, CIA Director John Brennan and NSA Director Adm. Mike Rogers, CNN said.

The allegations were included in a short synopsis appended to a report on Russian interference in the 2016 election. CNN said the allegations came in part from a former British intelligence operative that U.S. intelligence considers credible.

The synopsis also included allegations that the Russian government and Trump surrogates maintained a continuing stream of information, CNN said.

The network said it has reviewed a 35-page collection of memos that provided the source material for the two-page synopsis, the same on that Buzzfeed published.

Buzzfeed said the document has been circulating among lawmakers, journalists and members of the intelligence community for months.
