COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Columbia Police Chief Skip Holbrook says officers investigating a car involved in criminal activity when they smelled a stench that led them to a body in the trunk.

According to CPD, the car was found at the 1200 block of East Muller Avenue in Eau Claire, which is near Columbia College and the Lutheran Seminary School.

Investigators aren’t sure how long the body had been in there and won’t release any other details. The body has not yet been identified by the coroner.

Neighbors who live on the street were unable to go home for most of the day. In fact, resident Alfred Jones said he, too, made that discovery early this morning.

"My dog was going crazy," Jones said. "She just had puppies, so I thought it was instincts. Come to find out we had a situation right behind my house. Didn’t know at all."
