COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

A third member of the Richland County Recreation Commission has resigned from the board, according to a source close to the situation.

George D. Martin, Jr., one of five members targeted by the Richland County Legislative Delegation as needing to step down from the board following the indictment of former executive director James Brown, III, submitted his resignation letter to Gov. Nikki Haley on Tuesday.

"I have enjoyed serving the residents of Richland County through providing services such as parks and recreation activities," Martin's letter said. "I feel confident that the service I have voluntarily provided has been fruitful and fulfilling."

Martin goes on to say "personal family issues" were pushing him to leave the board.

Two other members of the board, Wilbert Lewis and Weston Furgess, Jr., tendered their resignations in the past several weeks.

Executive Director Brown also retired from the board following his indictment on charges that he used his office to coerce sex.

The announcement comes before a panel appointed by Governor Nikki Haley will hear public comment regarding the recreation commission. The members have been told if they don't attend the hearing Wednesday, they will be removed from office.
