EASLEY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

An Easley family is mourning the loss of their pet Pomeranian, Meeka.

The five year old pup was put down less than 48 hours after going missing, and the family says they want to know why.

"He was our baby! This was like losing a family member,” said Misty Bridges.

Misty Bridges and her fiancé, Matthew Silsbee, got Meeka five years ago and say he was like one of their children.

Bridges says a Good Samaritan found Meeka about a mile from their Easley home on Saturday. Meeka was not micro-chipped and didn't have a collar on, so the Good Samaritan couldn’t get in touch with the family.

The Good Samaritan took Meeka to Animal Emergency Clinic in Greenville the next day, after realizing he was having problems breathing.

"They made her think that he needed this major surgery when they knew in the paperwork it states that it could be inflammatory or could be something else. They didn’t give the inflammatory drugs a chance to work," said Bridges.

Bridges says Meeka had a history of tracheal problems that were easily managed with medication and believes the vet misdiagnosed her dog’s condition.

The family says Meeka was euthanized just a few hours later.

“You can't be in that profession and not even have a second thought that this that could be a four year old's puppy that you’re killing," said Bridges.

The clinic's medical records indicate that vet was ‘unsure if the dog had throat swelling or a collapsed trachea.’

The records also show that the Samaritan couldn't pay for Meeka to have an emergency tracheotomy, and without the funds, he was euthanized.

Animal Emergency Clinic declined to comment about this case or about their policies and procedures.
