BISHOPVILLE, SC (WIS) -

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, SLED, is looking into the cause of a massive house fire that killed a man in Lee County.

John Wesley Woodham, Jr, 75, died inside his home on Ashland Stokes Bridge Road in Bishopville. Flames broke out around 5 p.m. Thursday evening.

Witnesses say Woodham initially escaped the fire but then went back into the house for his dog. Family members tried to go in to get Woodham, but could not.

"We kicked the front door in and the smoke just started coming out. Wes has been here his entire life. I'm pretty sure this is the house he grew up in,” Tommy Woodham, the victim’s cousin said.

John Woodham had a wife and three children. Funeral services will be Saturday at 5pm at Kellytown Baptist Church.
