STATEWIDE (WIS) -

South Carolina's state park system mostly fared well through Hurricane Matthew except for coastal parks such as Hunting Island and Edisto Beach.

Aerial photos of the coast courtesy of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration show what areas up and down the Atlantic coast looked like following Matthew's parallel trek from Florida to North Carolina.

Although it is too early to tell just how Hunting Island and Edisto Beach fared, NOAA images show widespread erosion and dune breaches at or near state park property.

Duane Parrish, Director of the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism says Hunting Island and Edisto Beach will both be closed for several weeks.

Edisto Beach State Park experienced major beach erosion and possible saltwater intrusion into the electrical systems. Parrish said the oceanfront campground was covered in sand after Matthew.

The Live Oak Campground at Edisto Beach and its cabins were not damaged and should be open by Thanksgiving, Parrish said. As for the oceanfront campground, it's just too soon to tell. Reservations for the oceanfront campground have been moved through December 31.

Some Edisto Beach residents were allowed back on the island on Tuesday. There is still no water on the island and many roads remained closed on Wednesday.

Parrish says Hunting Island saw the worst of the damage. Beach erosion and downed trees are a major issue at Hunting Island. Saltwater intrusion into the electrical systems also occurred. There is also a breach in the beach from the ocean to the lagoon. Parrish said a re-opening date for Hunting Island State park has not yet been determined. It'll be closed at least through the end of the year.

Access to Hunting, Harbor and Fripp islands was blocked until Thursday because of damage to the roadway on both ends of the Harbor Island Bridge. Because of the closure, assessment and cleanup of Hunting Island was delayed.

The Myrtle Beach area state parks mostly saw tree damage.

Myrtle Beach State Park is scheduled to open sometime late next week. There was some damage to the end of the pier, but it should re-open with the park. "People will probably only be able to go three-quarters of the way out when the park opens back up, " Parrish says.

Huntington Island State Park saw some damage to the causeway railing. It should re-open within two weeks.

Parrish says he'll have a better idea on the extent of the damage to all the parks in a couple of weeks.
