COLUMBIA, SC (TheBigSpur.com) -- A premier program in college basketball will head to South Carolina to play this season.
Michigan, an NCAA Tournament team a year ago with a 23-13 record, is scheduled to play the Gamecocks on November 23, according to the school's schedule listed on their website.
The schools have met four times in the history of the programs with the first meeting coming in the 1961-62 season and the last meeting coming in 2005-06. The last time the two teams met, of course, was in the NIT Championship game with the Gamecocks prevailing 76-64 in Madison Square Garden. Tarence Kinsey scored 21 points and Tre' Kelley added 20 and seven assists as the Dave Odom-led Gamecocks knocked off Tommy Amaker's squad.
The Gamecocks also won the first meeting between the schools 70-68 in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Michigan won the 1989 national championship and has seven Final Four appearances, with the most recent one coming in 2013. Recently, the Wolverines have won the Big 10 regular season conference championship in 2012 and 2014.
This will be the first time that Frank Martin has faced Michigan as a head coach.
