COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

The WIS Sunrise team won a regional Emmy award for best morning newscast.

The Southeast Emmy Awards presentation was held in Atlanta Saturday, honoring the best in broadcasting in South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama. WIS won the best morning newscast category for its market size.

WIS submitted a breaking news segment from 2015 from the morning when the Confederate flag was to be removed from State House grounds. It was an emotional time for our state and an honor for WIS to bring the Midlands this historic coverage.

WIS morning anchor Mary King accepted the award on behalf of the television station.

"South Carolina has been through so much over the past year that the fact that our viewers allowed us to walk alongside them with it is just humbling," King said. "I know I speak for all of us when I say we thank God we get to do what we love everyday. For a management team that supports us everyday and for our family and friends who are with us in the audience with us tonight, we love you all so much and we're just so grateful for this honor. Thank you."

Former WIS Sunrise anchor Len Kiese, who now works at a television station in Orlando, FL, attended the awards presentation Saturday with the WIS Sunrise team.

An Emmy is one of the most prestigious and highly coveted awards in television.

Putting together a newscast is a team effort done by a majority of people who are behind the scenes.
