SC man accused of stealing $131,000 in NY pension checks

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A Camden resident is accused of stealing $131,000 in New York retirement benefits paid to a woman who died in 2010.

New York authorities say 67-year-old Joseph Grossmann was arrested Thursday in Kershaw County and charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

Federal public defender Allen Burnside says Grossman was released the same day after promising to appear in a New York courtroom.

New York Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli says Grossmann claimed a former New York state employee was still alive so he could pocket her retirement checks. Grossmann is accused of lying and creating fake documents.

Authorities say Grossmann and the woman lived together, but their relationship was unclear.

Grossmann received 61 monthly pension payments that started six weeks after her death.
