COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - WIS is proud to salute 92-year-old World War II veteran Ed Rodgers.
At the age of 17 he convinced his grandmother to sign the paperwork allowing him to enter the Navy as a steward's mate. The McBee native served aboard the USS Crescent City which transported Marines to the destroyed Hawaiian harbor after the Pearl Harbor attack.
Because of his skin color, Rodgers cleaned and cooked for the officers. He says he also had to worry about getting beat up.
Rogers is one of 66 veterans on what will be the last Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. Wednesday. It will be the very first time that he sees the memorial in his honor and saluting all of his battle buddies who made the ultimate sacrifice.
