COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Around 100 South Carolina Army National Guard military police are preparing to deploy to the U.S. Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba.

Guard spokeswoman Col. Cindi King said Tuesday the 131st Military Police Co. in Beaufort has been tapped for the job.

King says the unit has been told it should prepare for a potential deployment in the new fiscal year, which begins in October. Guard troops usually train for several months in preparation for a potential deployment.

It will be the first time a South Carolina National Guard unit has been sent to Joint Task Force Guantanamo, which is in charge of the U.S. military prison holding about 80 suspected terrorists.

King says the exact dates cannot be released at this time for security reasons.
