COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

A Richland County deputy received a high honor today for his work with the sheriff department's K-9 unit.

Dawndy Mercer Plank was honored to present Lt. Kevin Hoover with a certificate of appreciation from Governor Nikki Haley on behalf of the governor's office and the people of South Carolina.

The award was a complete surprise to Lt. Hoover and he was adamant it not be just about him - saying it's about the passion and hard work of his entire K-9 team.

Lt. Hoover says, "We spend more time with the dogs than we do our families. When I come home, like tonight when I get home from work, who's with me? When I come back to work, who's with me? When we go on vacations with our families, who's with us? It's something you have to take care of 24/7, 365."

Lt. Hoover's K-9 partner is named "Arko" - a nine year old full service police K-9 trained in criminal apprehension, tracking, and narcotic detection. They also make several trips to schools.
