Special needs Leesville 4th grader needs mobile stander

BATESBURG-LEESVILLE, SC (WIS) - A Leesville family needs your help making a dream a possibility this holiday season.

Alanna Thompson was born with spina bifada and hydrocephalus. She's paralyzed from the waist down and wheelchair bound.
At school, she uses a mobile stander. She really needs one at home, too.

"Just being in this stander helps her a lot with therapy, with bodily function, just everything," says Katie, Alanna's Mom.

But, insurance doesn't cover the stander because it already covers her wheelchair—and the stander has benefits aside from bringing Alanna up to the height of her classmates. Standing is good for
her medically. It helps her organ function, weight bearing on her joints and allows flexibility in her joints and tendons.

Even though she's very skilled at using her wheelchair to get around, dance and play with her little sister, Alanna says there's nothing like standing on the same level with her peers in the stander.

"It's very fun. And when I go to recess, they have a basketball court and when I try to reach it in the basket I get a better chance of reaching it. It makes me very proud," Alanna says.

So, to raise the $3,600 they need to get Alanna a mobile stander at home, her Mom started a GoFundMe page two days ago. They've already raised almost a $1,000.

"I just feel so loved, and supported that all these people care so much about us, you know...it just makes you feel really good," Katie says.
