COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - South Carolina Emergency Management Division has confirmed nine fatalities so far in connection with the weekend's massive rain and flash floods.
Five deaths were confirmed in Richland County.
Richland County Coroner Gary Watts confirmed the identities of those five killed: Alexandria Maret Holmes, 24; Timothy Gibson 45; Robert McCarty 78; Melissa Lee Hall, 35; and Robert Edens Allawos, 60.
All have been confirmed killed due to the flooding.
Another death was reported by the Kershaw County Coroner Monday morning. The Kershaw County Coroner said the body of a man was located in a flooded area in Lugoff on Pine Grove Road Monday morning.
The second Richland County death, EMD officials say, was a South Carolina Department of Transportation employee. According to SCDOT, Gibson died in flood waters on Garners Ferry Road on Sunday while overseeing work.
Transportation officials said Gibson was with the agency's Richland Maintenance Unit and was traveling in a truck that was caught in rushing waters, overturned and was swept away. An autopsy was scheduled Monday.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol updated its count Monday morning, saying now four people have died on South Carolina roads in weather-related incidents.
"One motorist struck a tree," said Derrec Becker with SCEMD. "One drowned in a vehicle when floodwaters rushed so quickly."
