SCDP reports Sen. Herbert Fielding has died

CHARLESTON, SC (WIS) - The South Carolina Democratic Party reports State Senator Herbert Fielding has died.

Fielding died Monday evening, according to a statement from the South Carolina Democratic Party.

Charleston County Democratic Party officials say Fielding was one of the first African Americans to be elected a representative in South Carolina since Reconstruction.

Fielding was elected to the South Carolina Senate in 1985, where he served until 1992.  He also served in World War II.

"He served for three years, then returned to the South Carolina State House in 1983," CCDP officials said in a statement."In 1985, Fielding was elected to South Carolina's State Senate, where he served until 1992."

South Carolina Democratic Party Chair Jaime Harrison issued the following statement on the passing of Senator Herbert Fielding.

"Senator Herbert Fielding was a true public servant and a state treasure. He was a World War II Veteran and one of the first African-Americans elected to the SC state legislature after Reconstruction. Herbert Fielding was a true champion for those who needed an advocate and a proud member of the Democratic Party.  He lived a life that we can all look up to and he will be sorely missed. Our prayers and condolences are extended to his grieving family."
