NEWBERRY COUNTY, SC (WIS) -

A man was shot and killed during a home invasion in Newberry County early Wednesday, the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office announced.

Deputies were called to a home on Ponderosa Lane near Little Mountain around 12:15 a.m. and found a man dead inside the home.

The man, who has been identified as Ronnion Danyell Barron, 32, was shot in the head, Coroner Craig Newton said.

"I don't know why anyone would want to harm him," said Barron's brother Mitchell Canon. "He was a good guy, very humble I loved him."

Investigators said two people were inside the home when they heard a knock at the door. When Barron pulled back the curtain over the door window, he was shot through the glass, deputies said.

The second person, meanwhile, fled to the back of the home and hid behind a mattress. That resident, investigators said, could hear additional shots being fired.

As the suspects were leaving the home, two other residents were approaching the house from a trip to Chapin. The suspects blocked them in and began assaulting them, but they managed to escape to a nearby home. The suspect and the vehicles left on Ponderosa Lane toward Lexington County.

The suspects were described as four black men dressed in dark colored clothing. One of the suspects had a camouflage scarf type cloth over his face. The suspects were believed to be armed with a handgun and a long gun. They left the scene in dark colored four-door vehicle.

"We feel pretty confident that whoever did this knew the area, we feel like they knew the people," said Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster. "It's a relatively isolated area, it's not an area where somebody would just pop in off the road to commit a robbery."

Investigators were conducting an inventory to determine what may have been stolen, early Wednesday.
