DMV sells out of NC Confederate battle flag plate after flap

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -

Talk about ending sales of a North Carolina license plate bearing the Confederate battle flag prompted a sales rush that sold out the available stock.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reports that 152 Confederate flag plates sold out in seven days after Gov. Pat McCrory said North Carolina should stop issuing the tags. State Department of Transportation spokesman Mike Charbonneau says more plates it will be available in about 30 days.

Efforts to remove the Confederate battle flag from public spaces followed the fatal church shooting of nine people in Charleston, S.C., last month.

McCrory said lawmakers needed to end the specialty plate, which is associated with the Sons of Confederate Veterans. Lawmakers countered that McCrory can act on his own.
