WIS Salutes Mr. James Carey

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - WIS is proud to honor one of the World War II heroes on Wednesday's Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. Mr. James Carey is from the Detroit area, but now lives in Ft. Mill, South Carolina. He had just two years of college when he went to war. He joined the Army Air Corps so he could fly but ended up working recon for the Army during the Battle of the Bulge. In the Ardennes Forest in Belgium, he lost his leg after the Germans lobbed an artillery shell near a jeep where he was taking cover. That blast killed his driver and platoon sergeant. Mr. Carey says Army nurses and doctors changed his life by teaching him not to treat his injury as a handicap. He went on to raise a family, earn multiple degrees, work for an electric company, and even ventured into politics. Mr. Carey says the climate brought him to South Carolina, but there are many more smiling faces and friendly people here than in Detroit. He says he'll pace himself during the Honor Flight by taking a nap or two.
