NEWBERRY COUNTY, SC (WIS) - Newberry County Sheriff's deputies made two arrests and seized drugs in response to a plea by the community.
According to the sheriff, because of a fatal collision in this area last week, and numerous complaints were made about speed and dangerous driving in that immediate area, deputies began enforcement activities including the establishment of this check point.
The suspects were identified as Derrick E Velasquez, 45, of Amityville, NY and Evony Maria Joyner, 26, of Charlotte, NC.
When the suspect's vehicle approached a traffic safety check point located on Highway 76 near Pete Harris Road, deputies could smell the odor of marijuana in the car. The deputies asked about the smell and one of the suspect's told the officers they had smoked marijuana earlier and showed the officer a container that still had residue of what appeared to be marijuana.
The deputies then searched the vehicle as they arrested the subjects and found more than 14 ounces of cocaine and 20 grams of crack cocaine as well as other items used in the possession and sale of drugs.
"We have learned that the best way to work with the community is to listen to them and let them guide us to the trouble areas," Sheriff Lee Foster said. "Citizens observe activities that we cannot and clearly we cannot be all places at all times. Our relationship with the community and willingness to not just hear complaints but to respond with solutions is what makes our partnership with the people we serve so unique."
Joyner and Velqasquez were arrested and transported to the Newberry County Detention Center where they will face charges of Simple Possession of Marijuana, Tracking Cocaine, and Trafficking Crack Cocaine.
