Aiken County police pursuit ends in fatal crash

AIKEN COUNTY, SC (WIS) -

A police chase in Aiken County ended with the death of the man who was attempting to escape an arrest, according to the coroner's office.

Troy R. Kooy, 50, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on Willow Run Road on Friday morning.

According to Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton, Kooy was driving his 2002 Dodge pick-up truck while trying to evade officers from the Aiken County Department of Public Safety.

Carlton said Kooy drove off the road, went down an embankment, and struck a tree. Kooy was not wearing a seat belt and was driving under a suspended license.

The coroner said excessive speed and alcohol may have been factors in this case.

An autopsy is pending and the investigation is ongoing.
