Officials: Patricia Drive shooting that locked down 4 schools was gang-related

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Richland County investigators now say a shooting that caused four Richland School District One schools to be locked down for a short time Thursday morning was gang-related and was retaliatory.

Richland One spokeswoman Karen York said the four schools, Caughman Road Elementary School, Burnside Elementary School, Lower Richland High School, and Mill Creek Elementary School, were locked down as a precaution during this search.

As for the shooting, Richland County Sheriff's Department officials say the shooting happened around 7 a.m. on Patricia Drive. According to deputies, a male was leaving his home when he was approached by two black males.

The victim attempted to flee the two men, but was shot in the lower body. The victim was transported to Palmetto Health Richland with non-life threatening injuries.

The two suspects, meanwhile, left the scene, but crashed their car into a home on the 2100 block of Leesburg Road.

Deputies continue to investigate the incident, but say the community is not being cooperative at this time.
