CAYCE, SC (WIS) - The fourth and final phase of the Cayce Riverwalk Park opens Friday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Phase four is known as the Battlefield Connection. It connects the Cayce Riverwalk to the Timmerman Trail, which runs through land donated by SCANA last year.
Portions of the land show evidence of habitation by Native Americans that dates back over 12,000 years. It also includes structures such as a pre-revolutionary garrison, Civil War earthworks and a battlefield site. It was the site of the Battle of Congaree Creek, where Confederate soldiers attempted to stop the advance of William Tecumseh Sherman's Union advance on Columbia.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony is at 2 p.m.
