NEWBERRY, SC (WIS) - A look at the criminal histories of Theia McArdle and Richard Bowman show a past that included physical violence as well as child abuse.
At the time of the murder of 3-year-old Gabriel, McArdle was working as an escort who advertised herself on Backpage.com. Her young son and Bowman, her live-in boyfriend, were with her when police say she went to meet her client in Newberry.
After checking her extensive criminal history that included more than 15 arrests, McArdle had at least two prior child abuse charges in the past two years. The latest of those charges came in 2014. McArdle was listed as "disabled" on the police incident reports
Bowman also had a long arrest record in Asheville. It included assault with a deadly weapon, assault by strangulation and breaking and entering. The 27-year-old man held several jobs at a fast food restaurant and convenient stores in 2014.
North Carolina Social Services was investigating the family, but that investigation was closed just four months ago.
