Filing begins Friday for Lexington County sheriff's race

LEXINGTON COUNTY, SC (WIS) - Candidate filing begins Friday for those looking to replace former Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts, who resigned and plead guilty to harboring illegal aliens in a federal corruption case late last year.

At least five candidates have come forward and said they plan to seek the seat held by Metts for 42 years: West Columbia Police Chief Dennis Tyndall, Richland County Investigator Justin Britt, Lexington Police Assistant Chief Jay Koon, former Columbia officer and former Lexington deputy Jim Crawford, and Lexington County resident AJ Blues.

Candidates have 10 days to file for the race. So far, Koon and Britt have officially filed as Republican candidates. If a primary is needed, a March 3 election will be held to determine party nominees.

The special election for Lexington County Sheriff will be held April 21.

In the meantime, Lexington County will retain Interim Sheriff Lewis McCarty.
