Woman struck, killed by car in DeKalb County identified

A woman is dead after she and her child were struck by a vehicle Wednesday morning in DeKalb County.

It happened around 7 a.m. on Durham Park Road near South Indian Creek Drive.

Police said 37-year-old Samsun Hahar and her 11-year-old son Shahbin Hossain attempted to cross Durham Park Road and were struck by a private utility truck.

Samsun died as a result of her injuries. Shahbin is currently at Egleston Children's Hospital in stable condition and undergoing testing. The extent of his injuries have not been released.

"A beautiful person," said Clayton Anderson, a neighbor who manages the condo complex where the family lives. "I've known her. She walks here all the time, very pleasant woman."

Those who live in the area said crossing the street in the area is dangerous.

"They come through here speeding, coming around the curve fast, coming through here merging or whatever," said Patricia Hughes.

The utility truck driver remained on the scene. Police said he will not face charges since the mother and son did not use the crosswalk.

However, DeKalb County School's officers are investigating, since the mother and son were walking toward a school bus when the utility truck struck them. They want to make sure the bus was properly positioned in the roadway as it was stopped.

Shahbin attends Dunaire Elementary School. The district said the principal went to the hospital to see the 5th grader. The school also had a team of counselors on hand to help students deal with news of the accident.

"I'm very sad about it," said Lula Turner, as she walked her grandson home from school. "I saw some of the students in there, and you could tell they were upset because their eyes were crying."
