Authorities urge resident to take special care with sending, receiving mail

LEXINGTON, SC (WIS) - When an item leaves Shirley Hilton's Lexington home, she normally doesn't think twice about it.

"I have never really worried about theft from our mailbox before," Hilton said.

Unfortunately, area police say the Hiltons and several of their neighbors in the Woodcreek development were targeted by thieves. Investigators estimate about a dozen home in the area had their mailboxes cleaned out looking for anything tied to personal information including checks.

"They're looking for those checks so they can duplicate those checks that are going out into the community and pass those checks with the numbers on the bottom...and ffraudulentlyuse those checks," said Lt. Matt Davis of the Lexington Police Department.

Police recommend keeping all important pieces of mail, including ones that contain checks, out of your mailboxes entirely. Instead, they should be taken to a post office or handed to a letter carrier directly.

Authorities also say you should try giving your carrier special instructions like dropping it off at the back door of your home to protect any important delivery you're expecting.

Meanwhile, Lexington Police are still looking for leads in connection to the mail thefts. If you have any information that may help with the investigation, call Crime Stoppers at 1-88-CRIME-SC (1-888-274-6372).
