COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - The trial begins this week for two of three men charged in the 2013 murder of young mother Kelly Hunnewell.
Jury selection was Monday for Trenton Barnes and Lorenzo Young. Barnes was charged as a juvenile in the murder since he was 16-years-old at the time Hunnewell was shot and killed in July of 2013. Troy Stevenson also is charged in the case, but he will testify against the other two suspects.
All three were charged with murder, two counts of kidnapping and attempted armed robbery. Police determined all three were documented gang members.
33-year-old Hunnewell was working as a baker at a facility on Tommy Circle when a neighbor found her body. Columbia Police investigators determined the three men attempted to break into a nearby business, but when they weren't successful, they went to the bakery where Hunnewell was working and shot her.
A jury of eight women and four men was selected. The jury will be sequestered.
The case captured the attention of thousands in the Midlands after police released surveillance video of three men who entered the bakery around 3:30 a.m. and then hurriedly left after one of them shot Hunnewell.
The trial, which will have more than 30 Columbia Police Department officers and investigators scheduled to testify, starts Wednesday at 9 a.m.
