COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Former South Carolina Gamecocks star Demetris Summers was taken into custody by the South Carolina Department of Public Safety after officials say he wrecked his car in Lexington County on Tuesday.

According to L. Cpl. David Jones, the former Lexington standout was charged with DUI, possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine, and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Jones says the single-car accident took place around 4:50 a.m. on Cromer Road. Officers arrived on the scene to find a tire missing on the driver side of the vehicle and two men outside the car.

According to the incident report, the two men told officers they had just changed a flat tire on Highway 378 and they were looking for the lug nut.

Officers believed Summers was under the influence and conducted a field sobriety test that he failed. Following the test, officers found bags of crack cocaine in the car with a .40 caliber Taurus handgun.

Summers was released from the Lexington County Detention Center on Wednesday after posting $17,000 bail.
