IRMO, SC (WIS) - Some people celebrate their birthday with cake and ice cream; others treat it just like every other day.
For a woman in Irmo, she marked her most recent birthday, by taking a big leap.
"For some moments in life there are no words," said Dodie Bruening, reading from a poem she wrote.
Meet Dodie Bruening and you'll know she is rarely at a loss for words.
"They say I'm a tough old lady," said Bruening, with a laugh.
The 84-year-old has checked a lot of items off of her bucket list, but she decided this year, she'd tackle the big one.
"They couldn't believe an old lady was going to jump," said Bruening.
Dodie Bruening made the trip to Chester to visit the folks at Skydive Carolina.
"I was not nervous. I was not afraid," explained Bruening. "I was ready for it."
It was a jump she'd been hoping to take since she was a little girl. Bruening grew up near Fort Bragg and said she always wanted to skydive.
"The more I think about it, the more beautiful it was. It was a living dream," said Bruening.
It's a memory she didn't know she'd get the chance to make.
"Ten years ago I was told at Mayo Clinic to get my affairs in order," explained Bruening.
That didn't stop her.
"I mean, I've just always wanted to be happy," said Bruening.
She was happy in mid-October, as she glided through the sky, to celebrate her 84th birthday.
"Just go for it. Know you can do it. Believe," said Bruening. "Have faith and confidence in yourself, no matter how old you are."
Bruening still has a couple of items left on her bucket list, including taking a drive to visit her younger brother.
