Emergency crews have cleared the scene after they were dispatched to the federal courthouse in downtown Columbia following the receipt of a suspicious letter.

Officials at the Matthew R. Perry Federal Courthouse say they received a letter with a white powdery substance on it Friday afternoon.

The U.S. Marshals Service tells WIS the powder was field tested and identified as cornstarch.

It was on a letter that was addressed to the "Clerk of Federal Court" and was not addressed to anyone specific, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.

The 900 block of Richland Street in front of the courthouse was closed while crews investigated. The street is now open.

The Columbia Police Department, Columbia Fire Department and Richland County EMS were called to the scene.

There are no reports of injuries.

The FBI is investigating and says it has no comment.
