LEXINGTON, SC (WIS) -

A Lexington High School student has been charged with third-degree assault after a fight in the school's cafeteria Wednesday afternoon.

According to Lexington School District One, both 16-year-olds involved in the altercation were immediately suspended from school and their parents were notified.

Video of the fight, which has been provided to WIS, shows the altercation.

Because the girls are juveniles, WIS is not identifying them.

A Lexington County Sheriff's Department incident report indicates the fight started around 12:20 p.m. because of a verbal altercation that took place earlier in the day.

As one of the 10th graders approached the other about the argument, one of them tried to get out of her chair when the other one "grabbed her the hair and started throwing punches," the report states.

Video shows the girls landing on the floor after one flipped the other over. The girl who appeared to be the aggressor continued punching the other teen in the face until a school administrator eventually stopped the fight.

"The district takes any incident like this very seriously," Chief Communications Officer Mary Beth Hill said. "Our primary concern is always the health and safety of our students and we are working closely with the Lexington County Sheriff's Office."

"We are asking students not to pass along rumors they are hearing but, rather, to report those rumors to a school administrator or the School Resource Officer."

Hill said the district also has a Tip Line (803-821-1232) where students can anonymously report concerns. Students can also call Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC, which also takes reports of school crime.

Hill said the rest of the school day proceeded normally.

The girl who was charged will be prosecuted in family court.
