SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Seven adults are accused of child neglect after deputies said they found 15 kids living in a double-wide trailer that smelled of urine, was covered in roaches, animal feces and more.

Spartanburg County deputies were alerted to possible abuse and child neglect by Spartanburg School District 6 and responded to the home where 22 people live in Woodruff.

Lt. Kevin Bobo with the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office said the school district was notified them after a child made claims about sexual abuse. He said there was another incident where a teacher was trying to help one of the children and a cockroach crawled out of their underwear.

Deputies said when they arrived, they saw 10 dogs and four cats running around, six kids swimming in an above-ground pool filled with green algae water from lack of chemical treatment.

"The conditions on the outside of the home were bad; inside it was worse," Bobo said.

Inside the home, deputies said they found animal feces on the floor, a roach infestation in the kitchen cabinets and throughout, piles of clothes and clutter, medicine bottles laying around along with unsecured guns.

Deputies said the home smelled of urine, especially in one bedroom.

"The situation could have been a whole lot worse, especially if one of the kids had gotten a hold of a firearm."

All 15 children living at the home were placed into emergency protective custody, according to deputies.

"I'm not shocked, and I'm glad the kids are out of that situation," said neighbor Pat Goforth.

She said while her neighbors stayed mostly to themselves, she said she did see the kids wandering alone, even walking in the road without clothes on. Goforth said she wishes she would have called police long ago.

"People need to call when they suspect something is going on that shouldn't be," Goforth said. "And I would give anything if I would have done it sooner."

Deputies said arrest warrants were issued on one count each of unlawful neglect of a child for the following people: 28-year-old Cherie Toney, Aaron Dodson, 35-year-old Andy Dunbar, 58-year-old David Hayes, 26-year-old Brianna Henderson, 31-year-old Karen Dunbar and 46-year-old Cindy Ann Cox.

The suspects were given personal recognizance bonds when they went before a judge on Wednesday afternoon.

Dodson was the only suspect to talk to FOX Carolina upon release from jail, claiming his innocence.

"What they done was illegal," he said. "They broke into my house and done what they should not have done."

Deputies said more charges could be filed as the investigation continues.
