Sumter investigators arrested a 22-year-old and charged him with attempted murder in connection with a Friday afternoon shooting at a car wash.

Investigators arrested Diquandrae Rhabb on Sunday night and took him to the Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center.

Police say Rhabb and a second, unidentified man approached a North Main Street car wash around 2 p.m.

Reports indicate the incident began when a man approached the car wash on foot and began firing on one of the patrons. There was an exchange of gunfire before the initial shooter fled on foot.

Victim Arterrell Marques Witherspoon, 29, is believed to have fired back at the shooter.

However, it is unclear whether he will face charges. Witherspoon is listed in stable condition at a local hospital for his injuries.

A 58-year-old man, considered an innocent bystander who was in the vicinity of the shooting, was treated for non-life-threatening injuries after being struck by a stray bullet.

As for the second suspecnt, police described him as a 6-feet-tall black male with a light complexion, a goatee and is between the ages of 17 and 25.

This incident, police said, involves some of the same individuals connected to at least a dozen shooting incidents reported since the beginning of the year in the South Sumter community of the city.

Many of the individuals in the incidents are known to police but lacked enough information from witnesses and others to effect an arrest. Police say these incidents appear to be connected to illegal drug activity and other crimes.

Police have reason to believe Witherspoon, Rhabb and other associates also were involved in a shooting incident May 17 on Red and White Street.

Witherspoon's arrest record dates back to 2004 on charges and convictions mostly on a variety of drug charges. He most recently was arrested in February of this year on a cocaine charge by the city and a marijuana charge filed by the county. He was again arrested by the county in June on weapons-related charges.

Rhabb's arrest record includes a number of drug- and weapons-related charges and convictions since 2012 by the city and county. His most recent arrests were in January on weapons-related charges.

Anyone with information related to this incident or any of the shootings is asked to call the Sumter Police Department at (803) 436-2700. Information can also be given anonymously to Crimestoppers at (803) 436-2718 or 1-888-CRIME-SC.
