Injury bug sidelines two more Gamecocks as prep begins for Aggies

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

The South Carolina Gamecocks returned to the Bluff Road practice field on Monday after having a day off to rest and recuperate.

The Gamecocks fielded a scout team in the week's first practice to give players a better idea of what to expect when they face Texas A&M on August 28.

While they intend to practice at a high level, the Gamecocks are hoping to keep any of their healthy players from wearing yellow non-contact jerseys. Junior offensive lineman Mike Matulis has been sidelined with a left knee sprain following USC's scrimmage on Saturday. Given the importance of the upcoming game, the Gamecocks can ill afford to have anyone come up with any major injuries at this point.

"We don't need anybody else hurt, that's for sure," said head coach Steve Spurrier. "Hopefully, Mike may have a chance to get back by mid-year. We'll just have to wait and see. They're going to try to treat him for a while and not operate. Offensive linemen don't have to plant and cut and jump too much. If he can stay solid in there and he's got a pretty good range of motion, they can play offensive line without a real super knee. So, we'll see if we can get him to that point."

Matulis is joined by Jamari Smith on the team's list of injured players. The sophomore cornerback suffered a broken left foot and is expected to miss the entire 2014 campaign.

The Gamecocks will return to the practice fields at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday. This practice will not be open to the public.
