Report: CofC Interviewing 6 Candidates For Basketball Coach

The College of Charleston has or will interview 6 coaches in their search to replace Doug Wojcik as the Head Men's Basketball coach for the Cougars according to a report from ESPN on Monday morning.

The 6 coaches are former College of Charleston star Anthony Johnson, Wofford Head Coach Mike Young, Clemson assistant Earl Grant, UConn assistant Karl Hobbs, NC State assistant Bobby Lutz and Virginia assistant Ritchie McKay.

Johnson is still considered by most to be the favorite for the opening. He's been vocal about how much he's wanted the job for several years and interviewed for the position the last time it was vacant. He's currently a scout for the NBA's New Orleans Pelicans.

Young has been the head coach at Wofford since 2002 and led the Terriers to the NCAA Tournament on 3 different occasions. He's also been named SoCon coach of the year twice. In an email to Live 5 on Monday, Young confirmed that he was interviewing for the CofC position on Monday afternoon.

Grant, a North Charleston native, is entering his 5th season as an assistant at Clemson. He also spent 6 seasons as an assistant under former College of Charleston assistant Gregg Marshall at Wichita State. Before that he spent 2 years as an assistant at The Citadel. Grant also confirmed to Live 5 that he was in the Lowcountry to interview for the position.

Hobbs also has solid head coaching credentials after spending 10 seasons with George Washington in the Atlantic 10. He won 2 conference tournament titles and was the A-10 coach of the year in 2006. He was let go by the school after the 2010-11 season and is currently in his 2nd stint as an assistant with the Huskies.

Lutz spent 12 seasons as the head coach at UNC Charlotte where he led the 49ers to the NCAA Tournament 5 times. He's currently the Wolfpack's Associate Head Coach under Mark Gottfried.

McKay spent 13 seasons as a head coach at 5 different schools going from Portland State to Colorado State to Oregon State then New Mexico and finally Liberty. His best season came in 2004-05 when he led New Mexico to the NCAA tournament. He left Liberty after the 08-09 season to take the Associate Head Coaching job at Virginia.

The school's search committee is hoping to have a recommendation to give to President Glenn McConnell by the end of the week.
