CPD: Man jumped off Ravenel Bridge after making drug references to officer

MT. PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) -

The search continued Monday afternoon for man who Charleston Police say jumped off the Ravenel Bridge shortly before 6 a.m.

Police say the incident began at about 5:40 a.m. when an officer was patrolling along East Bay Street when he observed a man in a car circling a parking lot several times.

The man drove toward the officer and made incoherent statements, prompting the officer to approach that vehicle, according to the incident report. Police say the man then said, "Wanna do some lines, some lines of coke, man" and held up a clear plastic baggy containing a white powdery substance.

The vehicle sped off before the officer could make contact, the report states.

As the officer pursued the vehicle as the car entered the East Bay Street entrance ramp to the Ravenel Bridge, the driver was seen throwing multiple small baggies of a white powdery substance out of the window and increased speed, prompting the officer to end the chase, according to the officer.

The report states the driver then slowed and came to a complete stop near the peak of the bridge. He reportedly got out of the car, jumped the concrete barrier to the pedestrian walkway, climbed the fence and jumped off the bridge into the water below.

Charleston County EMS, Charleston Harbor Patrol, North Charleston Harbor Patrol, the Coast Guard, Mount Pleasant Police and the Charleston County Rescue Team all responded to the area.

Several lanes of the bridge were closed early Monday morning as the search continued and as officers processed the scene.

Police have not released the name of the suspected jumper.
