SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

School officials have canceled a pageant and talent contest at McCracken Middle in Spartanburg after a letter spread on social media saying it shouldn't happen.

Officials tell FOX Carolina that they became aware of the letter earlier in the week. In it, the letter reportedly said that the pageant could cause detriment to a student's self-esteem and academic success.

The pageant, which parents said was outlined at student orientation, was supposed to be a school fundraiser.

Spartanburg School District 7 officials said the pageant had "the best of intentions," but they ultimately decided to drop it because of the parents' concerns.

"(It) hadn't gotten far enough to be a problem," a district official told FOX Carolina.

Muthemma Machimada is the mother of a McCracken student. She said her daughter was interested in participating behind the scenes and it was meant as something fun, but has been blown out of proportion.

"I think it's a good opportunity for a child to help build self-esteem, you know, their personality, it helps shape some character," Machimada said.

Because the pageants and talent show was supposed to be a fundraiser, the district said they do not know yet how they will make up the money. They said other schools in the area do have pageants.
