City adding additional cab loading zones in Five Points

The start of a new school semester means plenty of college students will be filing into Five Points and the Vista.

"I think it's great, there's a lot of good shops, a lot of good restaurants down here," said Kate Scofield. "Coming from a small town where I didn't have sidewalks or boutiques so this is going to be an awesome area to come in groups and like talk to people."

Yet at night some neighborhoods in Columbia has had its fair share of problems.

Perhaps no clearer showed than last fall when a USC student lost her ability to walk after being shot outside of a nightclub.

That crime was followed by a case of sexual assault, a stabbing and fights that have broken out in Five Points.

And Five Points wasn't alone when it comes to incidents.

Just last spring in the calm early morning hours in the Vista, a shooting broke out in the Vista.

It is why Columbia police are asking college students to plan carefully before a night out anywhere.

Always know where you're going and how to safely get there, while making sure you're not going alone

"I got out with a group of people, I never feel like I'm unsafe or anything," said Lauren Bradley. "I always have my eye out and to stay safe."

Enhancing safety has also become a priority for the city.

This week officials will be adding more cab loading zones in Five Points for visitors to use, as well as shuttle stops for student transit.

Police also say when going out you should stick to well-lit areas and carry a cell phone to call 911 in the event of an emergency.
