CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

A Charlotte teenager is expected in court Thursday after he was arrested, accused of pointing a laser at a police helicopter while it was in the air .

According to police, the incident happened on Tuesday night just before 10:30 p.m.

Officers say 19-year-old Smith Hayden Brundage was arrested and charged with two counts of use of a laser device towards on aircraft.

He is expected in a Mecklenburg County courtroom on Thursday.

That crime is against state and federal laws.

In North Carolina, a person can be charge with a felony for "willfully [pointing] a laser device at an aircraft, while the device is emitting a laser beam, and while the aircraft is taking off, landing, in flight, or otherwise in motion."

If found guilty, Brundage could face five to 20 months in prison for each count.
