State Museum Grand Opening - Planetarium, Observatory & 4D Theatre

Join the SC State Museum at the grand opening of their new planetarium, observatory and 4D theater! To kick off the day, there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony with model rockets launched by students from the Challenger Learning Center. The day will be packed full of planetarium shows, 4D movies, the opening of a new art exhibition, Building a Universe, live bluegrass, blues, beach and gospel music, plus other exciting programs and activities. Guests can also tour the new telescope gallery and see the new observatory. All the World's a Stage: Anita Lobel

Anita Lobel's name is synonymous with the best in children's literature. Her life and career are truly amazing: from Holocaust survivor to designer to revered author and illustrator of children's books. This exhibition is comprised of over 70 works on paper and 30 books, representing more than 40 years of the artist's work. Selections range from Lobel's art as a textile designer in the early 1960s to some of her most famous books, such as Nini Here and There, Sven's Bridge, and Away From Home. The show will be on view in the CMA's Education Gallery and in the community gallery at Richland Library's Main Branch. Free and open to the public at both locations.

Can three guys really cover thirty-seven Shakespeare plays in less than two hours? This fast-firing comedy does just that as it parodies all of the Shakespeare plays (plus the sonnets) with only three performers in two acts. This play is full of energy as the characters run across the stage and keep you guessing how they will pull off the next play. Clever use of some interesting costumes also adds to the fun.

FWC Inaugural Bass & BBQ competition

FLW is adding SC flavor to the 2014 Forrest Wood Cup with its inaugural Bass & BBQ competition as part of the FLW Expo. The 35-team BBQ competition is sanctioned by the SC Barbecue Association and will be part of a yearlong points race to find the best barbecue in the state. On Saturday, fishing fans can sample 5 competitors for $5. Awards will be presented Saturday afternoon just before the Forrest Wood Cup weigh-in at Colonial Life Arena. On Sunday, teams will sell barbecue, allowing fans a chance to come back and buy their favorites. Enjoy live entertainment throughout, including Jeremy McComb on Saturday, and John Wesley Satterfield and Rodney Atkins on Sunday.

Saturday, August 16, 2014 will be the 234th anniversary of the Battle of Camden, considered the worst Patriot field battle defeat of the American Revolution. Join Historic Camden Revolutionary War Site in commemorating this historic event at the annual Battle of Camden Remembrance Day featuring a wreath-laying ceremony, blacksmithing demonstrations by the Philip Simmons Artists-Blacksmith Guild, colonial games, guided tours of the Kershaw House and more.
