Many SC families opting for online schooling

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

In a matter of days, students will be heading back to class.

And according to a new study, many will be heading back with just a click of a mouse.

South Carolina Connections Academy is a virtual public school based in Columbia.

They've been open for six years now and say they expect to serve nearly 4,000 students throughout the state during the 2014-15 school year.

South Carolina-certified teachers work with students to develop customized learning programs that address each student's personal learning style and education needs.

"Our survey shows that families choose virtual online school for a variety of reasons," said Mickey Revenaugh, co-founder of Connections Academy. "The primary one is that the conventional setting just isn't working for their student. They are seeking an option that fits their child better. Secondly they may be looking for a more flexible schedule or a chance to be more involved in their child's education."

South Carolina Education Connections enrolls students throughout the state and kindergarten through 12th grade.

The school is accredited and part of the South Carolina Public Charter School District.
