The Lexington County Sheriff's Department Aviation Unit discovered a stolen vehicle during a National Night Out celebration Tuesday, the sheriff's department announced.

Lexington County Sheriff A. Lewis McCarty said the Lexington County Aviation Unit spotted and recovered a stolen vehicle near the 200 block of Rutherford Road during the event in Gaston.

At the end of the National Night Out event, the Aviation Unit was returning to the helicopter hangar located on Ball Park Road in Lexington when senior helicopter pilot Lt. Garry Rozier spotted a suspicious vehicle located on a power line near the 200 block of Rutherford Road.

"In all of my years in law enforcement, that vehicle just jumped out to me as very suspicious," Rozier said.

While piloting the helicopter, Rozier sent a request to dispatchers via radio for a road patrol unit to respond to the location in order to investigate the vehicle.

A road patrol deputy from the South Region Patrol District, which is based near Pelion, responded to investigate the vehicle and discovered that it had previously been reported stolen.
