Dixie Youth World Series

Lexington is the place to be for baseball fans over the next week as 36 Dixie Youth teams from three divisions and 11 southeastern states are set to face off for the World Series title - right here in the Midlands! The festivities begin Friday, August 8 with a home run derby and the opening ceremony.

Come join in the excitement the "Super Bowl of Bass Fishing" right here in Lake Murray Country, featuring championship fishing, live music, Bass & BBQ Festival, pro expo and seminars, giveaways and more! The tournament takes place on Lake Murray, launching from Dreher Island State Park. Weigh-ins will take place at Colonial Life Arena, along with a FREE Rodney Atkins Concert at 4 p.m. on August 17.  Don't miss the expo - including seminars - at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center! Southeastern Toy Soldier Show

The South Carolina State Museum presents the Southeastern Toy Soldier Show from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 9. A much-anticipated event, this annual treat offers the public a stroll through history. Booths of toy soldier collectors and vendors will feature soldiers and other miniature figures from all periods of history from ancient Rome and Egypt through the Revolutionary and Civil wars to the 20th century. In addition, reenactors will present a living history timeline from the Revolutionary War to World War II.

1st Annual Owen Walker Caldwell Memorial 5K

The Owen Walker Caldwell Memorial 5K supports children with life-limiting illness and their families, or those who have tragically lost a child. Proceeds will benefit Hands of Hope South Carolina, which offers pediatric hospice and palliative care to children visiting or living in SC. Come early to enjoy a special Celebration of Life program in memory of Owen and the loved ones of all race participants, and bring the kids to play in the Family Fun Zone! Springdale 5K At Sunrise

Run where the horses run - on the historic Springdale Race Course, host of Carolina Cup and the Colonial Cup! The race presents a unique opportunity for you to see the track as a thoroughbred steeplechase race horse would. Bring the whole family and your dog along for the walk. Spectators can watch from grandstand, where the entire course is visible. Tailgating is encouraged and live music will entertain. Kershaw Health will be onsite offering free body composition analysis for participants and spectators alike. Proceeds benefit United Way of Kershaw CountyVolunteers welcome!

Columbia Marionette Theatre Presents "Puss in Boots"

Long before Shrek came along, Charles Perrault penned the original tale of a crafty cat in fancy footwear. CMT's Puss in Boots is a whimsical retelling of this classic fairy tale, complete with a shape shifting ogre and of course, a pair of spiffy boots. The show is directed by John Scollon, with puppets by CMT's founder Allie Scollon.

Keep the Lights on - 811 Run
Saturday, August 9, 2014 -- 8:11 p.m.

Registration: $8.11 (includes shirt)

The 811 Run is an 8.11K night race to remind everyone to always call 811 before digging. The race will be a timed 5 mile run with an additional 0.04 mile to complete the 8.11K. Each mile of the course will be illuminated in the utility color code to educate people about underground utility lines. The goal of the race is to remind everyone of the importance of going the extra distance when it comes to safety and ALWAYS call 811 before digging. Volunteers welcome!

Moonlight Cemetery & Secrets from the Grave Tours

Grab your flashlight and join Historic Columbia to tour one of Columbia's oldest cemeteries. You'll discover centuries of stories etched in stone on the markers and headstones found within Elmwood Cemetery's acres of carefully planned grounds. Secrets from the Grave Tours start at 7:30 p.m. and highlight the symbols found on many of the markers and headstones in this historic cemetery. Moonlight Cemetery Tours start at 8 & 8:30 p.m. and cover the lives, burials, cemetery plots and tombstones of families and prominent citizens from Columbia's 19th and 20th centuries.
