Jarvis Klapman reopened after house fire extinguished

WEST COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

A portion of Jarvis Klapman Boulevard in West Columbia has reopened after a short closure due to a house fire.

According to police, traffic is being diverted down Greenwood Road and 12th Street.

Fire officials say a call came in about a house fire on Batchelor Street around 7 a.m. The two homeowners were inside when they arrived, but both were removed safely.

Investigators believe the female homeowner put something in a clothes dryer and sat back down. A short time later, according to officials, the homeowners' dogs started barking and smoke filled the home.

At this time, investigators believe the fire started in the dryer.

Jarvis Klapman Boulevard was closed for an hour and 15 minutes while firefighters stretched a fire hose across the road.

The American Red Cross has been called to aid the homeowners.

No word on damage estimates.
