BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

Those bright yellow buses are preparing to roll again as most South Mississippi students head back to school this week. For teachers, it has meant weeks of training workshops, lesson planning, and classroom decorating.

Shannon Anderson's students aren't the only ones anxious about the new school year.

"I feel excited as always. I'm like the children, nervous about meeting the new ones that come in," said Anderson.

This year, Anderson is switching from teaching second grade to fourth grade. She wants her new classroom to be bold and welcoming.

"I believe in bright colors. I like for students to feel like this place is home. We're all running frantically, trying to get things done," she said.

Preparations for the first day of school at Jeff Davis Elementary in Biloxi are a bit more hectic than usual. That's because the office staff is moving into a new administration wing and front lobby, while trying to juggle late student registrations.

"We love it. We can't wait for the new school year to begin," said records clerk Lisa Demoruelle.

Outside, crews are scrambling to finish installing the security fence around a bright new playground. It is quite a transformation considering that the space was once so dry and sandy, neighbors called it 'the biggest sand box in Biloxi'.

"For my Keesler parents, they would come and that would be the first thing they see and they would be unsure. Now you know we're doing what's best for children in giving them that beautiful playground equipment, so I can't wait. I cannot wait for them to enjoy it," said Jeff Davis Elementary Principal Dr. Melanie Nelson.

It's getting close, but Biloxi teachers are ready to greet the little ones when they show up for class Thursday morning.

"With a great big happy smile and let them know I'm happy they're here," said Anderson.

Classes start Wednesday for schools in Moss Point, Poplarville, George and Jackson Counties.   Other districts will start Thursday and Friday, with the exception of Gulfport and Ocean Springs. They will start later on August 18th.
