BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The city of Birmingham is gearing up for a major civil rights convention starting this Sunday.

The Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) will be holding its 56th Annual Convention in Birmingham. The convention kicks off Sunday, August 10 to Wednesday, August 13.

Between and 7,000 and 8,000 people are expected to attend. SCLC President and CEO Charles Steele said they chose Birmingham its importance to the civil rights movement.

"They are saying they want to be taught. They want to understand how Birmingham, Alabama strived, the success during the Civil Rights Movement to where they are today," Steele said.

Steele is in Birmingham and was at Birmingham City Hall on Tuesday promoting the event. Some of the people invited to speak at the convention include the Reverend Jesse Jackson and the former SCLC head Joseph Lowery.
