COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Columbia police captured a carjacking suspect overnight following a chase down Interstate 20, a spokeswoman for the department said.

Jennifer Timmons said CPD officers were called to a hotel on Columbiana Drive for a report of a carjacking at about 1 a.m. The victims told investigators they were sitting in an Oldsmobile when an armed man approached them and demanded money. They said the gunman opened the passenger-side door and assaulted the man, then forced the female victim out of the car.

The victim ran to safety and called 911 from a nearby hotel while the woman flagged down an officer who responded to the scene.

While patrolling the area, officers received a call about 1/2 hour later about a larceny at the Harbison Walmart.  Surveillance video revealed the stolen Oldsmobile and a Camaro that was reported stolen to Richland County Sheriff's deputies.

At about 2:30 a.m., officers received a report of two armed men in a Camaro chasing people at Paces Brook Apartments. Officers saw the Camaro speed away from the apartment complex and one officer had to jump out of the way to avoid being hit.

Another officer saw the Camaro speeding toward Harbison Blvd. with no lights on. The officer tried to pull the car over, but the driver took off and officers pursued.

While eluding police on Harbison Blvd. and Piney Grove Rd., police say the driver hit another vehicle, drove through several yards on Misty Vale Ln. and turned onto Interstate 20. Police say the vehicle hit a median on the eastbound entrance ramp and blew a tire. The vehicle continued on I-20 until exiting on Monticello Rd., where it went through the grass and hit a fence in the 5400 block of Monticello Rd.

Two men bailed out of the wrecked car and police ran after them.

One man was taken into custody at the crash scene while another managed to flee. 21-year-old Devontae Xavier Bryant is charged with accessory to carjacking and failure to stop on police command.

The second man has not yet been identified.

Police recovered the stolen Oldsmobile.
