ASHEVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Crews have found a body after a reported drowning at Lake Julian, according to the Buncombe County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said the call came in just after 3 p.m. on Thursday for the possible drowning. Divers from Henderson County were called in an hour later to help look for the body.

After 8 p.m., deputies said the body had still not been recovered and the search would stop for the rest of the night.

According to Skyland Fire and Rescue Deputy Chief Ryan Cole, this is the first drowning in about 20 years.

Deputies said the area of the lake is popular for fishing and boating. Swimming in the lake is not allowed due to it being attached to a Duke-Progress power plant.

Cole says the victim was with three friends at the lake.

Witnesses told Cole the victim started to struggle as he was swimming, and they tried to save him.

"The last time I spoke with them they said they actually had a hold on him and was not able to keep him up, and keep him up and going with him cause hey we're also tiring out as they we trying to swim as we'll... They're very shaken, they're very shaken cause this was a friend," said Cole.

Rescue crews from Charlotte were bringing 3-D sonar equipment to aid in the search.

Cole said the search crews found the victim about 9 a.m. on Friday.

The man's name has not been released.
